Joint care for rabbits
Joint stiffness in rabbits is common due to wear and tear, and can make movement difficult and sore.
Most rabbits over six years of age will have some sort of joint stiffness, although like other animals it can affect them much earlier.
Giant breeds are more susceptible to joint stiffness at a younger age compared to other breeds. They can also suffer with spinal pain as they get older, restricting their movement. Stiffness can most commonly affect their hips, elbows and knees but can impact any joint.
Rabbits are well-known for hiding pain and it’s often hard to detect any issues. They don’t usually limp or cry out with pain, which can mean it is often missed. Regular check-ups with your vet will help to monitor their health and keep an eye out for anything such as stiffness.
Common signs of joint stiffness in rabbits include:
- Stiffness when moving, especially after lying down.
- Getting dirty or scruffy, especially around the back end.
- Getting wet underneath, as they cannot get into the normal position to urinate.
- Reduced appetite.
- Difficulty or reluctance to jump up/down.
- Difficulty getting in and out of litter tray.
- Sleeping and resting more.
- A change in behaviour, especially grumpiness or uncharacteristic aggression towards people and/or animals.
Tips to support joint stiffness in rabbits
Weight control – extra weight can put pressure on their weight bearing joints. Keeping them at a healthy weight will help.
Exercise – encouraging low impact movement by engaging with them can also help. Scatter feeding pellets rather than using a bowl can help to get them moving more.
Living space – keep their living space clean as this can reduce the risk of infection and inflammation leading to joint stiffness. A clean and dry living area can also help prevent any accidents that can lead to joint damage.
Comfortable environment – a comfortable living environment can help reduce stress on rabbit’s joints. Provide soft bedding, a comfortable resting area and a space for them to stretch their legs.
Foot care – proper foot care can help to prevent stiffness in rabbit’s feet and legs. Keep their nails trimmed and provide a clean, dry surface for them to walk on. Also monitor for pododermatitis – sore hocks – which can further affect their mobility.
Joint supplements – joint supplements such as Nutraquin+ which contain key ingredients like Boswellia Extract, Glucosamine and Chondroitin can help support joint health in rabbits. Speak to your vet who can offer advice on dosage.
