Why do cats eat grass?
As a cat owner you’ve probably spotted them chewing on some grass outside or from an indoor pot.
Many cats like to chew on grass, and it’s usually not something to worry about – it can even be beneficial to your cat.
There are many reasons why your feline is nibbling on some grass, however if you’re worried about them, it’s important to speak to your vet as they can rule out any serious causes.
Helps with digestion
When cats catch and eat prey, they tend to eat most of the animal, including the bones as well as the fur/feathers which can be difficult to digest and cause constipation. Licking and swallowing their own fur can lead to this too. If they can’t vomit these things up naturally, eating grass can help them to be sick or acts as a natural laxative, helping to break them down and allowing your cat to pass them more easily.
Nutrients
Grass contains vital nutrients that your cat may otherwise be missing from their diet, such as fibre or folic acid. This is why they may be attracted to eating it. Make sure you’re feeding your cat a ‘complete’ cat food which should have all the nutrients they need.
Is grass poisonous to cats?
Grass is safe for cats to eat unless it’s contaminated with herbicides or pesticides. If your cat likes to regularly eat grass, keep them away from any that has been treated with these substances.
The main danger that can result from cats eating grass is if a blade is accidentally inhaled and becomes stuck in their nasal passage. This will likely cause your cat to sneeze excessively, so if you notice this then take them to the vet so the grass can be removed safely.
Grass can also get stuck in a cat’s digestive system, so if you notice that your cat is unwell, take them to a vet so they can investigate if this is the cause.
Grass seeds are also something to watch out for as they can get stuck in your cat’s ears, nose, eyes and paws and cause serious problems. If you spot any signs of your cat being unwell, speak to your vet.
Toxic plants – make sure that all toxic plants have been removed from your home and garden so that your cat isn’t tempted to nibble on those instead of the grass.
Why do cats eat grass and throw up?
When cats eat grass and vomit, they are usually doing it on purpose. Cats are not able to digest large amounts of grass, so eating grass may make them throw up. This helps to clear their stomach of things like, fur, feathers, bones and parasites, that can irritate their digestive system, helping them to feel better. However, if your cat is vomiting frequently, or if they vomit, and seem to be off their food, take them to the vet to check them over.
It simply tastes good
Some cats just genuinely seem to enjoy grass and leafy greens. Cats have unique personalities and tastes, and some may just decide that grass is fun and tasty to eat.
If you are worried about the amount of grass your cat is eating or concerned that your cat is getting sick from it, contact your vet who’ll be able bto check them over for any health issues.
