Benefits of aloe vera for dogs’ skin health

Benefits of aloe vera for dogs’ skin health

As dog owners, we want nothing more than to keep them happy, healthy, and itch-free.

When it comes to natural remedies for skin irritation, aloe vera is often a go-to for humans, but can it help our dogs too?

The short answer is yes. Aloe vera can support skin health in dogs when used properly. But there are important precautions to consider.

What is aloe vera?

Aloe vera is a succulent plant known for its healing and soothing properties. Its gel, found inside the leaves, is rich in:

  • Vitamins A, C, and E – powerful antioxidants
  • Enzymes – that help reduce inflammation
  • Amino acids – for skin repair
  • Polysaccharides – which promote skin hydration and healing

These nutrients make aloe a natural remedy for treating burns, dry skin, insect bites, and irritation in both humans and pets.

What are the benefits of aloe vera for a dog’s skin?

  1. Soothes itchy or inflamed skin

Aloe’s anti-inflammatory and cooling properties help calm redness, swelling, and itchiness caused by allergies, hot spots, or insect bites.

  1. Heals minor wounds and burns

The gel speeds up healing and reduces the risk of infection when applied to minor cuts, grazes, or sunburn.

  1. Moisturises dry or cracked skin

If your dog suffers from dry elbows, paw pads, or flaky skin, aloe vera helps restore hydration naturally without leaving a greasy residue.

  1. Natural antibacterial and antifungal

Aloe vera has mild antimicrobial effects, which can aid in preventing infections in superficial wounds or fungal conditions like ringworm.

Is aloe vera safe for dogs?

Only the clear gel inside the leaf is safe for topical use. The latex – a yellowish substance found just under the skin of the aloe leaf, which contains aloin is toxic if ingested. If your dog licks or eats raw aloe (especially the latex), it can cause:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Lethargy
  • Tremors (in rare cases)

Never let your dog ingest raw aloe. Always supervise topical application or use pet-safe products.

How to use aloe vera safely on dogs

  1. Choose a pet-safe product

Look for gels or creams labelled 100% aloe vera, free of alcohol, or better still, use a product made specifically for dogs such as the Nutravet grooming range. Pet specific products containing aloe vera, have many soothing and moisturising benefits for skin and coat health in dogs.

  1. Spot test first

Apply a small amount to a patch of skin to ensure your dog doesn’t have an allergic reaction.

  1. Apply to affected areas only

If using use aloe vera gel on the skin, avoid the eyes, mouth, or open wounds unless directed by your vet.

  1. Prevent licking

After applying, distract your dog for a few minutes or use a soft cone if needed to avoid licking the area until it’s absorbed.

When to call your vet

While aloe can help with minor issues, you should always consult your vet if your dog has:

  • Persistent hot spots or rashes
  • Open wounds or infected sores
  • Severe allergies or skin infections
  • Reactions after applying any product

Aloe vera is a gentle, natural way to support your dog’s skin health. Look for products containing aloe vera for added health benefits, from soothing itchy skin to healing small irritations, it can be a valuable part of your pet care toolkit.

It’s important to remember, not all natural remedies are safe in every form, so where possible, it’s always look for pet-friendly products.
